Hunter Biden announced plans to launch a meme coin called LAPTOP on Coinbase's Base network on September 9. The token, named after a laptop at the center of a 2020 election controversy, will reserve a fifth of its token supply for airdrops targeting specific wallet holders.
Biden confirmed the launch on his verified X account shortly after the Wall Street Journal reported the plan. According to the Journal, the token will have a 1 billion supply with the following allocation: the founding team, including Biden, receives 30% locked for six months then released over approximately two years; 20% is designated for two airdrop rounds covering wallets that lost money on the TRUMP coin, Biden's Substack subscribers, and recipients from a mailing list run by video journalist Andrew Callaghan; 20% is reserved for liquidity, exchanges, and legal costs; and up to 30% is earmarked for token burns tied to milestones including a new Bitcoin record high, LAPTOP's market cap surpassing TRUMP's, or a Democratic win in the 2028 election.
Counterfeit LAPTOP tokens appeared on multiple blockchains within an hour of the Journal's report, with more than a dozen fraudulent versions trading on chains including Solana, BNB Chain, and TON, generating approximately $6.9 million in combined volume before an official contract address was published.
The laptop referenced in the token's name was left at a repair shop in Wilmington, Delaware, in 2019. The New York Post published its contents in October 2020, weeks before the presidential election. An FBI agent testified at Biden's 2024 federal trial that the device's serial number matched Apple's records, though Biden has disputed this account, stating the files came from his cloud storage.
The TRUMP coin, which launched on Solana in January 2025, crashed more than 50% within hours when Melania Trump released her own token and has since traded significantly below its January peak.
