Morgan Stanley has warned investors that a stock market correction could occur within the next 30 days, with chief US equity strategist Mike Wilson citing energy costs as the primary concern.
Wilson told Bloomberg that elevated oil prices pose a drain on market liquidity. US benchmark crude has remained above $100 per barrel, up nearly 80% for the year. "If oil goes to $120, $130, $140, that's a drain on liquidity," Wilson said. He characterized current market liquidity as sufficient but not abundant.
Despite the warning, Morgan Stanley is not advising clients to sell equities. Instead, the bank is rotating toward companies that generate cash internally while maintaining its equity exposure.
Coinbase Coverage and Broader Market Dynamics
Morgan Stanley initiated coverage of Coinbase on September 10, assigning an equal-weight rating with a $250 price target, implying approximately 43% upside from current levels. The bank characterizes Coinbase as financial infrastructure rather than a pure cryptocurrency bet, noting that bitcoin spot trading now represents just over 10% of revenue, down from more than half at the company's 2021 listing.
Performance data suggests limited concentration in artificial intelligence stocks this year. The market-cap-weighted S&P 500 and equal-weight version of the same 500 companies have tracked closely together in 2026, both up roughly 13%. Historically, when AI drives market performance, a significant gap widens between these two indices.
