A Bitcoin-led crypto market rally on August 19 lifted the broader cryptocurrency market, with mega-cap altcoins Solana (SOL) and Ripple (XRP) both recording 10% gains.
The mid-week rally was fueled by a Bitcoin short-squeeze, which followed the U.S. Treasury's planned intervention in the bond market. During the upward movement, Solana experienced nearly $100 million in short liquidations over a 24-hour period, while XRP recorded $16.5 million in wrecked leveraged short positions. Additionally, spot demand supported the momentum, as U.S. SOL and XRP exchange-traded funds recorded daily net inflows of $2.1 million and $2.35 million, respectively.
Solana's Market Structure and Technicals
On the daily price charts, Solana reclaimed its 200-day Moving Average for the first time since November, surging past the July high of $84 to hit a three-month high of $87.20. While this move shifted its market structure to bullish, a true breakout from its 2026 price range of $76 to $98 is still required to confirm sustained upward momentum. Analysts noted that if SOL flips the mid-range level of $88 into support and moves above $100, an extra 16% upside could become feasible should bulls push toward the range high of $98. However, an overbought Relative Strength Index (RSI) signal indicated that a cool-off below the $88 mid-range could occur.
XRP's Technical Outlook
Despite its 10% surge from $1.00 to $1.10, XRP's daily chart structure remained firmly bearish, remaining below its 200-day Moving Average of $1.27. Because the RSI indicator had not yet signaled an overheated market, technical indicators left room for a potential rally toward the 200-day Moving Average, representing an upside potential of roughly 17.5%. This bullish scenario depends on XRP maintaining the July support zone of $1.00, as a breakdown below that level would invalidate the outlook and strengthen sellers' leverage.
Upcoming Market Catalysts
Future market direction will largely depend on Bitcoin's performance and upcoming macroeconomic data. The upcoming release of the Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index data is expected to serve as a key catalyst. A hotter-than-expected report could lower Federal Reserve rate cut expectations for September due to stubborn inflation, whereas a cooler reading could support risk-on sentiment and continued crypto market momentum.
