South Korea to Transition Traditional Assets to Blockchain
South Korea's financial regulator, the Financial Services Commission (FSC), has announced plans to broaden tokenized securities beyond alternative assets to include traditional securities such as stocks, bonds, and funds on a blockchain network. The initiative is part of the country's preparation to transition its capital markets toward around-the-clock trading.
Regulators have established a phased roadmap leading to the planned launch of the tokenized securities market in February 2027. The first phase focuses on tokenizing privately placed corporate bonds and money market funds for institutional investors. The second phase will involve public securities, while the third phase aims to link tokenized securities with payment assets such as stablecoins and decentralized finance products for on-chain settlements.
Ripple's Growing Presence in South Korea
The Ripple network has drawn attention due to its existing collaborations with regional banks and financial institutions in the country. The South Korean government previously approved the integration of the XRP Ledger into the banking system, exemplified by Jeonbuk Bank replacing the traditional SWIFT network with the Ripple blockchain to enhance cross-border transaction efficiency.
Financial institutions have increasingly utilized the XRP Ledger for cost-efficient, rapid cross-border payments and on-chain transactions, driven by demand for faster and more transparent digital asset infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.
