XRP Ledger Sets Transaction Record With 3,254 Transactions in Single Ledger

The XRP Ledger processed a record 3,254 transactions in one ledger on September 13, though 2,000 identical 1-drop payments from just 20 wallets accounted for most of the activity, likely representing throughput testing.

XRP Ledger Sets Transaction Record With 3,254 Transactions in Single Ledger

The XRP Ledger reached a new transaction record on September 13, processing 3,254 transactions in a single ledger. The milestone, flagged by Hussein Zangana of the XRP Ledger Foundation, surpassed two previous records of 2,713 and 2,768 transactions that occurred within the same day.

The record ledger, numbered 106,965,249, closed in 3.8 seconds. A scan of 7,600 consecutive ledgers from September 13-14 revealed an average of about 84 transactions per ledger, with only 43 ledgers exceeding 2,000 transactions and only the record ledger surpassing 2,800.

Transaction Composition

Twenty accounts were responsible for 2,000 of the record transactions, each sending exactly 100 transactions of 1 drop—the smallest unit of XRP at one millionth of a coin. Combined, these payments moved 0.002 XRP, valued at less than a cent at XRP's price of $1.37. Each transaction paid a 20-drop fee, burning approximately 0.04 XRP in total.

The remaining transactions comprised 458 OfferCreate orders on the XRPL's decentralized exchange, 229 ticket creations, 74 check cashes, and 22 trust line changes. At least 890 transactions failed with technical result codes, primarily payments whose paths ran dry and fill-or-kill orders that could not be filled. Failed transactions still destroy XRP paid as transaction costs under XRPL rules.

Eight transactions carried memos from t54 labs' x402 facilitator, a tool that enables artificial intelligence agents to pay for services with XRP and RLUSD.

Network Architecture Prevented Fee Spikes

The XRPL's dynamic block size limits prevented fee escalation despite the record volume. Unlike Bitcoin's fixed block size, the XRPL increases its soft transaction limit when ledgers contain more transactions than the current threshold and decreases it if consensus takes longer than 5 seconds. Below the soft limit, transactions pay the 10-drop reference cost, with fees climbing exponentially above it.

On Monday following the record, the network's expected ledger size sat at 3,082 transactions, and the open ledger fee remained at the 10-drop minimum.

Market Context

The transaction record occurred in a quiet market, with XRP trading near $1.37 on September 14, up 0.6% over 24 hours. Bitcoin traded near $77,517. Daily XRPL transactions have remained above 2 million through early September, peaking at 2.572 million on September 3.

Zangana characterized the activity as likely throughput testing, noting that simple XRP payments impose minimal load on the network.
