Zcash (ZEC) climbed more than 40% in a single 24-hour window, reaching a peak of $805.52 and briefly reclaiming price levels not seen since November 2025.
The price movement coincided with two key catalysts. Around August 21, 2026, Grayscale filed an 8-K with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) signaling its intent to convert the Grayscale Zcash Trust into an exchange-traded fund (ETF) on NYSE Arca. This follows a playbook similar to Grayscale's previous Bitcoin and Ethereum trust conversions. Additionally, the broader market has seen a growing interest in privacy-oriented digital assets.
Market participants also noted earlier institutional backing, including a significant ZEC position disclosed by Multicoin Capital in May 2026, which is centered on the thesis that privacy features in digital assets are underpriced. On-chain data indicates that a substantial share of Zcash transactions utilize shielded addresses, the network's cryptographic layer designed to conceal sender, receiver, and transaction amounts.
Prior to this surge, Zcash had undergone a significant multi-month recovery that peaked near $750 in November 2025. Following that peak, the asset cooled, trading in a range between roughly $500 and $700 through mid-August 2026 before Thursday's move broke that range to the upside and set a fresh cycle high.
The filing represents a notable development for privacy-preserving cryptocurrencies, positioning ZEC as an asset that major institutional managers seek to package within traditional financial infrastructure. However, the filing is not an immediate approval, and the timeline for an SEC decision remains unknown. Past trading history for ZEC also indicates that sharp rallies have occasionally been followed by notable corrections.
