Zcash Surges Past $1,200 as Privacy Coin Rallies Into Crypto Top 10

Zcash (ZEC) climbed 20% within a 24-hour period, reaching $1,210.67 while the broader cryptocurrency market remained largely unchanged. The privacy-focused coin briefly touched a record high of $1,225 as buyers accelerated their shift toward alternative cryptocurrencies, pushing its market capitalization close to $20 billion and into the cryptocurrency market's top 10 by valuation.

Drivers Behind the Zcash Rally

Strong buying activity from both retail traders and institutional investors seeking exposure to privacy-oriented assets supported the advance. Zcash allows users to select between transparent transfers and transactions executed in shielded pools. Interest in these features has increased recently, with the amount held in shielded pools rising to 4.85 million ZEC—its highest level since June—recovering from a low of 4.32 million tokens.

Institutional demand has also been bolstered by Grayscale's Zcash product, which began trading on August 25 as an exchange-traded product offering direct spot exposure to ZEC with a 2.50% expense ratio. Reported assets under management for the product reached about $463 million following sustained investor inflows.

Derivatives and Liquidations

Derivatives positioning amplified the upward move as bearish traders were forced out of leveraged positions. According to CoinGlass, total cryptocurrency liquidations reached approximately $212 million over a 24-hour period, with short positions accounting for roughly $156 million.

ZEC led individual asset liquidations with over $45.32 million cleared, surpassing Ethereum at over $35.16 million, Bitcoin at $16.79 million, and Arbitrum at $12.94 million. This imbalance indicates that short covering played a significant role in accelerating the price movement.

Price Levels to Watch

ZEC's breakout above $688 confirmed the continuation of its broader bullish structure, surpassing a level that previously capped advances in May and November. Holding above $1,200 could encourage buyers to target $1,300, with a potential extension toward $1,500 if ETF demand and shielded usage continue. Conversely, an inability to hold $1,200 may result in a pullback toward $1,000.
