Iran Proposes 7-Day Hormuz Reopening as Markets Weigh Oil and Rate Pressures

The United States and Iran are reportedly discussing a phased arrangement that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within roughly seven days in exchange for easing Washington's blockade of Iranian ports, according to Reuters. The proposal emerged during talks involving the two countries around the U.N. General Assembly in New York, with Qatar serving as mediator. President Donald Trump said negotiations are continuing, though no deal has been signed.

The strait, which normally carries roughly one-fifth of the world's oil supply, has been largely non-functional for months. Iran mined and effectively closed the waterway after U.S. and Israeli strikes began in late February. Commercial traffic collapsed from a prewar average of roughly 120 to 140 vessels per day to only a handful of confirmed daily transits.

The two sides previously signed a 14-point memorandum in June that included restoring commercial traffic and lifting the U.S. blockade. However, it fell apart within weeks amid disputes over routes, Iranian administrative authority, and fees. The current proposal hinges on sequencing: Iran holds the strait, while Washington holds the blockade, making the order of concessions critical to any agreement.

Financial Market Response

Markets showed immediate reaction to the geopolitical uncertainty. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down roughly 0.7%, while the S&P 500 lost about 0.5% and the Nasdaq Composite roughly 0.7%. The Russell 2000 fell closer to 0.9%.

Treasury yields moved higher, with the 10-year yield near 5.14%-5.16%, close to a 19-year high, and the 30-year hovering around 5.43%-5.45%. Rising yields make borrowing more expensive and raise the hurdle for stocks and other risk assets. Brent crude oil remained near $104 per barrel.

Gold held near $4,280 per ounce, while silver traded near $63.30-$64.00. Despite geopolitical tensions typically favoring precious metals, higher real yields and a stronger dollar limited gains in the sector.

Cryptocurrency Markets

Cryptocurrencies faced pressure from the same forces affecting equities. Bitcoin traded around $83,800-$84,600, down roughly 2%-3% over 24 hours, while ether changed hands near $2,670-$2,690. Solana sat around $114-$116, while XRP fell roughly 5%-7% to around $1.49-$1.51. Total crypto market capitalization hovered around $2.85 trillion-$2.96 trillion.

Spot products for major cryptocurrencies continued to attract inflows, and liquidations remained in the hundreds of millions rather than billions, suggesting the market reaction differed from prior crypto downturns.

Federal Reserve Uncertainty

Added uncertainty came from the Federal Reserve. Following September's 25-basis-point hike, the federal funds target sits at 3.75%-4%. CME's Fedwatch tool showed traders leaning heavily toward another rate increase at the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on October 27-28, with the probability of an October hike above 70% and odds of a quarter-point hike at 64%.

Markets are now managing two substantial variables simultaneously: additional monetary tightening and a diplomatic negotiation over a waterway central to global energy markets. A Hormuz breakthrough could ease oil pressures and alter market dynamics. However, traders remain cautious after the June agreement lasted only weeks before collapsing.
