MicroStrategy reported record third-quarter financial results on Oct. 29, with net income of $19.5 billion compared to roughly $2.8 billion a year earlier. Nearly all of the company's $20.9 billion in operating income came from gains in the fair value of its Bitcoin holdings.
The company has expanded its Bitcoin holdings by 26% this year to 848,517 BTC, valued at approximately $68.9 billion at the company's Oct. 23 reference price. CEO Michael Saylor cited increased institutional demand and banks embracing cryptocurrency as signs of a strengthening market, noting that Bitcoin was trading 21% above its 200-week moving average.
However, the company's performance metrics reveal a different picture. MicroStrategy reported a negative 3.7% year-to-date Bitcoin yield as of Oct. 25, a reversal from 4.5% in July. This 8.2-percentage-point deterioration occurred even as Bitcoin holdings increased from 843,775 BTC in late July to 848,517 BTC in October. The metric, which measures the percentage change in Bitcoin per diluted share, suggests the company's accumulation is not keeping pace with share dilution.
MicroStrategy raised approximately $21.2 billion through capital markets transactions during the first 10 months of 2026. In the third quarter alone, the company generated $5.4 billion in net proceeds from common stock sales but deployed just $588.1 million toward Bitcoin purchases.
Financing Costs Draw Scrutiny
Central to the dilution challenge is MicroStrategy's expanding preferred-stock financing strategy, particularly its STRC security, which carries a 12% annualized dividend rate. The company disclosed that it sold approximately $431.8 million worth of Bitcoin in 2026 to help finance preferred stock dividends and STRC repurchases. Cumulative preferred dividends paid reached nearly $1.5 billion.
K33 Research head Vetle Lunde modeled an alternative approach in which funds allocated to STRC repurchases and dividends were instead used for Bitcoin accumulation. Under that scenario, the company would hold approximately 843,303 BTC compared to its actual 848,250 BTC—a difference of just 4,947 BTC achieved at a cost of approximately $725 million in additional annual dividend obligations.
Bitwise's European head of research André Dragosch offered a more favorable assessment, arguing that MicroStrategy's credit metrics compare favorably with investment-grade corporate borrowers and that STRC's 12% yield may overcompensate investors for financial risk.
MicroStrategy reported approximately $5 billion in designated dollar assets, which the company estimates could cover 3.4 years of preferred dividend and interest payments at current rates. Following shareholder approval on Oct. 28, the company will introduce daily dividend accrual for STRC in November.
